NeighborShare Expands to Boston, Partnering with Six New Local Nonprofits

Innovative direct-giving platform launches in new city with support from the MassMutual Foundation

BOSTON, MA (November 12, 2024) — NeighborShare, the pioneering direct-giving platform that connects donors with neighbors in need, today announced its expansion into greater Boston. The launch brings NeighborShare’s innovative approach to charitable giving to New England’s largest city, in partnership with eight respected local nonprofit organizations and with funding support from the MassMutual Foundation.

NeighborShare’s Boston launch marks a significant milestone in the organization's mission to create a more equitable and efficient charitable giving ecosystem. By leveraging technology to facilitate direct, transparent, and trustworthy person-to-person giving, NeighborShare provides immediate, targeted assistance to individuals facing financial hardships.

“We're thrilled to bring NeighborShare to Boston,” said Kelli Kreps, executive director of NeighborShare. “Our platform is already connecting neighbors in need with those who can help in 26 states across the country, and we're excited to work with our new partners to address critical unmet needs in the Boston community. The support from the MassMutual Foundation has been instrumental in seeding this expansion and we will be seeking out more Boston-based supporters to expand our number of nonprofit partners and ultimately neighbors served.”

The six nonprofit partners joining Women’s Money Matters and Bridges Homeward in NeighborShare’s Boston network are HarborCOV, La Colaborativa, NOAH, Roca, Sportsmen's Tennis & Enrichment Center, and Youthbuild Boston.

NeighborShare conducted an extensive discovery process earlier this year and selected the partner organizations through a competitive application process. Through the programs and services they already implement, partners will identify households in need and facilitate direct financial assistance for emergent needs such as car repairs, medical bills, childcare, and job training costs. Since its founding, NeighborShare has facilitated more than $1 million in cash assistance to nearly 10,000 neighbors nationwide. NeighborShare’s support serves as a safety net for safety net organizations, helping to ensure that a small, unexpected expense doesn’t cause a family to spiral into larger crises, like job loss or homelessness. With 1 in 3 Americans unable to afford a $400 emergency, this just-in-time cash assistance is crucial.

Verena Catherine Niederhoefer, Acting Executive Director of YouthBuild Boston, conveyed the organization’s excitement about the partnership: “Becoming a partner with NeighborShare will allow YouthBuild Boston to further assist young people of color in our community as they navigate a positive pathway to self-sufficiency, neighborhood responsibility, and careers in the building industry.”

NeighborShare Partners with Synchrony to Support Education in Fairfield County

NeighborShare, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to providing critical assistance to households facing emergency or pivotal needs is proud to announce a new partnership with Stamford-based Synchrony. This collaboration focuses on supporting education-related expenses for families and individuals in Fairfield County, empowering local students to overcome barriers to success and self-sufficiency.

As the new school year begins, many households are struggling to meet the costs associated with education although the needs persist throughout the year. From school supplies or tutoring to adult certifications and classes, these expenses can pose significant challenges for families already living on the edge. Synchrony and NeighborShare have joined forces to ensure that these needs are met.

Through this partnership, Synchrony employees will have the opportunity to directly support their neighbors by contributing to education-related needs in the local community. The process is simple and transparent: employees can visit https://www.nbshare.org/synchrony to browse profiles of real (but anonymized) Fairfield County residents who require assistance, and then choose to contribute to one or more of these needs. Donations can be made in increments as small as $10 to $20, with the option to cover the entire cost of a need.

One recent example was Adriana, referred to the platform by REACH Prep in Stamford. This fall, Adriana is headed to college to pursue her dream of becoming an architect. She was accepted into a top university with a hefty financial aid package, but to pursue her studies, she needs a new laptop that can operate with the digital architectural tools she needs for her classes. Adriana will complete a work study during her time at university, but to get her started on the right track, she needs to purchase the right laptop.

All needs featured on the platform are validated by local nonprofits, ensuring that each donation goes directly to those who need it most. This level of trust and transparency is at the heart of NeighborShare’s mission to revolutionize philanthropy by making it accessible, efficient, and impactful.

Innovative Charity Platform, NeighborShare, Hires First Executive Director

NeighborShare, an innovative platform that connects individual donors to other families during pivotal moments of need, announced today that Kelli Kreps has joined the organization as Executive Director. Kreps will succeed Diana Zhang, who along with Brian Kreiter, co-founded NeighborShare in 2020 with an entrepreneurial team of volunteers from a variety of industries. Zhang has led the organization since inception and will continue to serve on its Board of Directors.

NeighborShare works to get resources directly to families during pivotal moments when they have nowhere else to turn. The organization partners with the frontline staff at local nonprofits — case managers, social workers, teachers — across the country to identify critical needs of $400 or less that then get amplified by NeighborShare for funding.

“To say I’m excited to be joining the NeighborShare journey would be an understatement,” Kreps said. “Diana, Brian, and the team have built an incredible concept and foundation that puts NeighborShare in a position for explosive growth. Not only are we getting critical help directly into the hands of those who need it, but we are innovating on the traditional nonprofit model itself and hopefully creating a more equitable, accessible path for others to follow as well.”

Kreps comes to NeighborShare with nearly 15 years of experience in the nonprofit industry. Most notably, she led the U.S. network team at United Way Worldwide, the world's largest privately-funded nonprofit, supporting the national footprint of 1,100 affiliates.

“We could not be more thrilled to have someone of Kelli's caliber coming in to lead NeighborShare through its next phase of impact,” said Zhang. “It is also unbelievably validating to our model that someone with Kelli’s traditional and institutional experience recognizes that we are onto something big here.”

To date, NeighborShare has helped over 4,000 neighbors in need through 60 partner organizations across 26 states. Neighbors helped include Jessica from Las Vegas, who became homeless during the pandemic and started working with the local nonprofit Unshakeable to get back on her feet. Her glasses broke days before promising job interviews. Neither Jessica or Unshakeable had the means to buy replacement glasses, but the team at Unshakeable knew they had NeighborShare to turn to. Within days, Jessica was able to get new glasses and ace her interview. She’s now been securely employed for months.

“Our overarching goal is to get direct help to the people who need it the most, when they need it. By partnering with frontline heroes — on-the-ground experts who know their communities best — we have unlocked a powerful way for individual donors to make a real impact in their community,” said Kreiter, who serves as Chair of the Board. “The model works and we’re excited to bring in powerful new resources to continue building on the success of NeighborShare.”
