About NeighborShare
1 in 3 Americans can’t afford a $400 emergency.
NeighborShare is a nonprofit startup that fills a critical gap in our ecosystem, getting “just in time” resources to resource-strapped Americans by connecting neighbors who need help with neighbors who want to help.
How do we do it? We partner with front line staff at trusted nonprofits — case workers, social workers, etc. who are already on the ground in communities —to identify pivotal needs of $400 or less that would otherwise go unmet… needs that are otherwise slipping through the cracks and sending families into preventable crises.
We believe most people would lend a hand to a neighbor in crisis – but identifying those real-time needs is next to impossible for the average citizen. So NeighborShare makes the connection for you, indexing hundreds of emergent critical needs in real-time. When local options have run out, we use our platform to connect those critical needs with people who want to help, effectively removing the red tape to accessing real-time help.
Through NeighborShare, everyday donors can give with confidence, knowing their contributions will go directly to real households with real needs, and the families helped stay on track. Neighbors helping neighbors.
Founded during the pandemic, NeighborShare has quickly scaled our footprint to a national network of more than 60 partner organizations, directly helping over 8,000 neighbors across 25+ states. We have largely been powered by a dedicated team of volunteers who are experts in their fields—business strategists, engineers, product designers, marketers. We are also led by a Board of industry leaders from world-class companies like Goldman Sachs, VistaPrint, and Blackstone. Actively building toward a true national movement, our team is driven by a generosity of spirit and a shared vision of what the future of philanthropy looks like.
Role Overview
The next phase of our strategy development is applying what we’ve learned doing this work across the country to a handful of specific geographies and building the playbook for hyper-local activation. Due to a growing critical mass of nonprofit partners + a generous new gift, our first pilot geography has been identified as Boston, Mass. In addition to continuing to grow our national portfolio of partnerships, we will have the opportunity to activate a new ecosystem of neighbors specifically in the Boston market. NeighborShare’s Philanthropy Lead will be on the front end of a truly unique opportunity to help build a national movement, while playing a leadership role in the Boston market. You’ll be working with a strong team of scrappy, get-it-done entrepreneurs to build a meaningful nonprofit. You will work closely with the Executive Director to support ongoing national partnership development work, while also co-creating and helping implement the strategic plan for launching and growing NeighborShare in Boston. The ideal candidate will be familiar with Boston, including but not limited to its corporate networks, nonprofit ecosystem, and/or philanthropy environment. It is estimated that around 50% of the role will be focused on Boston, but likely higher than that in the beginning. Primarily, the role entails identifying, prioritizing, and building relationships with institutional and individual funders who have an interest in donating resources to some combination of strengthening our social safety net, direct cash assistance, emergency relief, and/or supporting direct service nonprofits in their service delivery. The Philanthropy Lead may also provide some support to Boston-based nonprofit partners. This role will require a high degree of emotional intelligence, savviness, and ability to listen well. NeighborShare deeply values transparency, trust, community, and dignity. Our model is to first develop an understanding of any local market before determining where we can best add overall value to the ecosystem, rather than blindly dropping in, duplicating services, or otherwise negatively disrupting positive momentum in a local social care system. This is an excellent opportunity for a self-starter (seriously, that’s not a buzz word in this case!) interested in putting their skills to use for social good, while gaining exposure to executives and other volunteers at the top of their fields. This person will report directly to the Executive Director. Much of the work can be done remotely, but Boston-centric relationship development and pitches should be executed in-person whenever possible. The role will require ~20 hours per week with room to grow the commitment. We are flexible in hiring either a part-time employee or an independent contractor, with most hours being worked during traditional business hours.
