Getting The Most Out of Your Nonprofit Volunteers. Nonprofit MBA 4.8

March 26, 2022 — Summary: In today’s podcast, Diana Zhang from NeighborsShare and Stephen Halasnik from Financing Solutions discuss how to get the most out of nonprofits volunteers. There’s no better approach to solving the challenges of staffing in nonprofits than the use of volunteers. From performing bureaucratic functions to helping in nonprofits fundraising campaigns, harnessing the strengths and the abilities of volunteers is key for the optimal operations of nonprofits. Owners of nonprofits need to look for ways to leverage the volunteers’ skill sets in the best possible ways.

Volunteers are the critical ingredient for the growth and progress of nonprofits. Today, the importance of volunteering to nonprofit cannot be downplayed even as nonprofits’ works are becoming more complex and complicated. The management of volunteers has become a fundamental issue in nonprofits operations. Every nonprofit owner should learn how to build, retain and motivate their volunteers to get the most out of them.

Moreso, volunteers help in identifying and bootstrapping promising creative endeavors within nonprofits. With their varying skill set, you would have access to a selection of experts that are the perfect fit for specific duties. For instance, roles like marketing, product management, IT, and more are what volunteers can perform within nonprofit organizations.

It’s essential that nonprofits pull in passionate people that are energized to help in reaching their objectives. Nonprofits should make the structure and dependency of the volunteer team more purposeful and intentional for a better volunteering experience.

Volunteering is strategic for the success of nonprofits. Hence, the management of nonprofit organizations should gear efforts towards recruiting, managing, and retaining volunteers for efficient service delivery. Having passionately engaged and dedicated volunteers ensure nonprofit deliver vital programs and services effectively.

Nonprofits volunteers perform various duties and can become relevant in several departments within nonprofits. For instance, they can lend their support on the board of directors to fundraising campaigns and work in direct customer service roles.

Adequate training is essential for high-level employees’ productivity. Nonprofits should train their volunteers to make them more relevant within the organizations. Many nonprofits have complicated tasks that demand specialized knowledge to be done properly. Training the volunteers ensures that their inherent skill sets are harnessed to align with the nonprofit’s core vision and mission.

Plus, education and training programs for volunteers help them become well-integrated into nonprofits’ core values.

There’s no denying that the more talented volunteers you have, the more efficient and effective your service delivery. Nonprofits should focus more on quality during recruitment exercises by ensuring that the recruitment process permits only competent people to be onboarded.

Working with brilliant minds ensures that everyone works on a level playing field, reducing burnout, frustration, and boredom. In addition, recruiting talents makes it easier for volunteers to get plugged into the organization seamlessly.

Experience has shown that volunteers become more engaged when they have a sense of belonging. The collaborative and strategic partnership is the jewel in the crown in nonprofit volunteering, so to speak. In other words, leveraging the strengths and abilities of others through a partnership is a strategic way of building nonprofits.

The management of your volunteers should be an utmost priority. There should be a clear line of communication to ensure that your nonprofit is always in sync with your volunteers. Put differently, you should have a leadership structure that manages the affairs of your volunteers in a way that aligns with your nonprofits’ set goals. Plus, you should be able to delegate functions to volunteers that have proven track of leadership ability to help in maximizing the efforts of others toward the attainment of your organizational objectives.

Nonprofit volunteers have provided immense benefits to the success of nonprofits. Still, some organizations are resistant to working with volunteers leading to increased overhead costs and a shortage of personnel. However, in today’s face-paced world, the ‘do-it-alone’ approach is not the best approach to growth. Nonprofits should look for ways to draw passionate and talented people into their fold for effective and rapid service delivery.

In addition, deepening ties with your nonprofit volunteers foster collaboration, motivation, and retention.

NeighborShare Expands to Boston, Partnering with Six New Local Nonprofits

NeighborShare, the pioneering direct-giving platform that connects donors with neighbors in need, today announced its expansion into greater Boston. The launch brings NeighborShare’s innovative approach to charitable giving to New England’s largest city, in partnership with eight respected local nonprofit organizations and with funding support from the MassMutual Foundation.

NeighborShare’s Boston launch marks a significant milestone in the organization's mission to create a more equitable and efficient charitable giving ecosystem. By leveraging technology to facilitate direct, transparent, and trustworthy person-to-person giving, NeighborShare provides immediate, targeted assistance to individuals facing financial hardships.

We're thrilled to bring NeighborShare to Boston,” said Kelli Kreps, executive director of NeighborShare. “Our platform is already connecting neighbors in need with those who can help in 26 states across the country, and we're excited to work with our new partners to address critical unmet needs in the Boston community. The support from the MassMutual Foundation has been instrumental in seeding this expansion and we will be seeking out more Boston-based supporters to expand our number of nonprofit partners and ultimately neighbors served.”

The six nonprofit partners joining Women’s Money Matters and Bridges Homeward in NeighborShare’s Boston network are HarborCOV, La Colaborativa, NOAH, Roca, Sportsmen's Tennis & Enrichment Center, and Youthbuild Boston.

NeighborShare conducted an extensive discovery process earlier this year and selected the partner organizations through a competitive application process. Through the programs and services they already implement, partners will identify households in need and facilitate direct financial assistance for emergent needs such as car repairs, medical bills, childcare, and job training costs. Since its founding, NeighborShare has facilitated more than $1 million in cash assistance to nearly 10,000 neighbors nationwide. NeighborShare’s support serves as a safety net for safety net organizations, helping to ensure that a small, unexpected expense doesn’t cause a family to spiral into larger crises, like job loss or homelessness. With 1 in 3 Americans unable to afford a $400 emergency, this just-in-time cash assistance is crucial.

Verena Catherine Niederhoefer, Acting Executive Director of YouthBuild Boston, conveyed the organization’s excitement about the partnership: “Becoming a partner with NeighborShare will allow YouthBuild Boston to further assist young people of color in our community as they navigate a positive pathway to self-sufficiency, neighborhood responsibility, and careers in the building industry.”

Sunindiya Bhalla, Executive Vice President of Roca, Inc., expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “NeighborShare’s innovative approach aligns perfectly with our efforts to provide timely, effective support to those in need. We’re excited to see how this collaboration will enhance our ability to serve a group of very vulnerable, young women and mothers who often have nowhere to turn to for support.”

Philip Giffee, NOAH Executive Director, shares that "“OAH is excited to be part of the NeighborShare innovative partnership. With nearly four decades of experience in addressing the evolving issues faced by area community members, we are extremely glad to be part of a collaborative effort to bridge pivotal resident needs that otherwise would go unmet.”

Kourou Pich, HarborCOV CEO, also shares that “HarborCOV is grateful and excited to partner with NeighborShare to connect domestic violence survivors with resources for safety and stability. We look forward to partnering with the NeighborShare team and broader community to support survivors.”

Thanks to the support of NeighborShare and its caring donors, Bridges Homeward is able to support some of the urgent needs of children in foster care and families in crisis. As we all know ‘It takes a village,’ and we are incredibly grateful that NeighborShare is part of ours,” said Courtney Gomez, Chief Program Officer, Bridges Homeward.

Women’s Money Matters participants are all women and girls who live on low-incomes. They often face unexpected emergencies that can undermine their hard-earned financial progress. Our partnership with Neighbor Share provides important support that can help mitigate these setbacks, and prevent minor incidents from derailing their journey toward financial stability,” shared Danielle Piskadlo, Executive Director of Women’s Money Matters.

The MassMutual Foundation, focused on helping build the financial well-being and resilience of communities around the country, has provided crucial funding for NeighborShare's Boston launch. Dennis Duquette, president & CEO of the MassMutual Foundation, stated, “Building stronger communities is at the forefront of everything that the MassMutual Foundation does. Throughout our work with NeighborShare, we have seen how their vision of creating more direct pathways to charitable giving directly contributes to the strength of a community. NeighborShare’s recent expansion into Boston represents a vital step in realizing that vision by continuing to foster financial security for those who need it most. We look forward to continuing our partnership and are committed to further increasing financial resilience across Massachusetts.”

NeighborShare Partners with Synchrony to Support Education in Fairfield County

NeighborShare, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to providing critical assistance to households facing emergency or pivotal needs is proud to announce a new partnership with Stamford-based Synchrony. This collaboration focuses on supporting education-related expenses for families and individuals in Fairfield County, empowering local students to overcome barriers to success and self-sufficiency.

As the new school year begins, many households are struggling to meet the costs associated with education although the needs persist throughout the year. From school supplies or tutoring to adult certifications and classes, these expenses can pose significant challenges for families already living on the edge. Synchrony and NeighborShare have joined forces to ensure that these needs are met.

Through this partnership, Synchrony employees will have the opportunity to directly support their neighbors by contributing to education-related needs in the local community. The process is simple and transparent: employees can visit https://www.nbshare.org/synchrony to browse profiles of real (but anonymized) Fairfield County residents who require assistance, and then choose to contribute to one or more of these needs. Donations can be made in increments as small as $10 to $20, with the option to cover the entire cost of a need.

One recent example was Adriana, referred to the platform by REACH Prep in Stamford. This fall, Adriana is headed to college to pursue her dream of becoming an architect. She was accepted into a top university with a hefty financial aid package, but to pursue her studies, she needs a new laptop that can operate with the digital architectural tools she needs for her classes. Adriana will complete a work study during her time at university, but to get her started on the right track, she needs to purchase the right laptop.

All needs featured on the platform are validated by local nonprofits, ensuring that each donation goes directly to those who need it most. This level of trust and transparency is at the heart of NeighborShare’s mission to revolutionize philanthropy by making it accessible, efficient, and impactful.

We’re thrilled to partner with NeighborShare on this important initiative,” said Denise Yap, president of the Synchrony Foundation. “Education is a cornerstone of opportunity, and by supporting local students, we’re helping to build a stronger, more resilient community here in Fairfield County.”

For more information about the partnership and how you can get involved, please visit https://www.nbshare.org/synchrony.
